Kizetsukyo Magai Three-Honored Great Stone Buddha

奇絶峡 磨崖三尊大石仏きぜつきょう まがいさんぞんだいせきぶつ

Climb the wooded gorge of Kizetsukyo, past a vermilion bridge and a waterfall named for the fierce deity Fudo, and after about four hundred meters of switchbacks the forest opens onto something the eye refuses, at first, to scale correctly: an entire cliff face carved with three Buddhas. The center figure, Amida, is more than seven meters tall; his attendants Kannon and Seishi flank him at nearly five meters each, the whole composition cut into a single slab of rock sixteen meters high and twenty-two wide. The instinct is to assume great age — Japan's most famous cliff Buddhas are medieval, weathered, half-returned to the stone. But this triad is a creature of 1966. It was designed by Domoto Insho, one of the leading Nihonga painters of the twentieth century, and carved on the collective vow of the city, its tourism association, and the local Kamiakizu civic society, consecrated on the Buddha's birthday. That tension is precisely what makes it strange: a monumental, painter-drafted Pure Land vision set into a postwar gorge, treating the whole ravine as a stand-in for paradise. It is a magaibutsu in the fullest sense — a Buddha that is the mountain — but one born in living memory rather than legend.
