Takamatsu City Stone Museum
高松市石の民俗資料館たかまつしいしのみんぞくしりょうかん
The Takamatsu City Stone Museum, opened in 1995 in Mure, the heartland of the world-famous Aji stone, is a municipal museum tracing the long history and culture of stone and the skills of its stonemasons. Near Yakuriji Temple in a district built on the stone industry, it re-creates early-Showa quarrying and workshops in dioramas and displays many stonemasons' tools such as chisels and hammers. Above all, its collection of 791 'Mure-Aji stonemason's tools' was designated an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property in 1996, giving it high scholarly value as a systematic record of a community whose livelihood was stone. Set on terraced, stone-walled grounds that themselves embody the quarrying landscape, it is a nationally rare museum devoted entirely to stone, illuminating the roots of Japan's stone-carving culture through tools and craft.
