Kakuenpo, Shosenkyo Gorge
昇仙峡 覚円峰しょうせんきょうかくえんぼう
In the north of Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, a colossal granite rock peak that symbolizes the National Special Place of Scenic Beauty, Mitake Shosenkyo. Formed by the erosion of the Arakawa River and the weathering and water-erosion of granite, it rises almost vertically about 180 m from the valley floor, the emblem of a gorge praised as "the finest gorge beauty in Japan." Its name comes from the tradition of Kakuen, a disciple of the Zen master Takuan, who is said to have practiced asceticism on a summit only a few tatami mats wide. Together with Senga Falls and Tenkorin, it forms the highlights along the walking path, and in autumn the sight of the grayish-white peak towering above an orange-tinted gorge is especially popular. It is also a component of the Agency for Cultural Affairs' Japan Heritage, "The Source of Koshu Artisanship: Mitake Shosenkyo."
