Godzilla Rock, Oga
男鹿のゴジラ岩おがのごじらいわ
On the wave-battered rocky shore at the southwestern tip of the Oga Peninsula, a single chunk of 30-million-year-old volcanic tuff has been carved by wind and sea into the unmistakable profile of a monster rearing its head — Godzilla, mid-roar. The likeness is uncanny enough that the rock has become Oga's signature sight, the anchor of the Shiosezaki Geosite within the Oga Peninsula–Ogata Geopark, surrounded by a small bestiary of other named formations: Godzilla's Tail, Gamera Rock, the Twin Rocks, Hokakeshima. The real show comes at dusk. For a few weeks around April and October, the setting sun drops to exactly the height of Godzilla's open mouth, and for a moment the silhouette appears to breathe fire over the Sea of Japan — an image so reliably spectacular that photographers line the shore for it, and that earned the spot 2nd place nationwide in a 2018 ranking of Japan's most coveted sunset views. There is no entry gate, no ticket, no opening hours: just a slippery tidal platform, a monster made of stone, and the timing of the tide and the sun.
