Okama Crater Lake (Zao Mountains)
御釜(蔵王連峰)おかま
High on the spine of the Zao mountains, on the border between Miyagi and Yamagata, sits a perfectly round pool of green water that nothing can live in. Okama — "the cauldron" — is a crater lake about 325 meters across and 27 meters deep, cradled in a steep volcanic bowl between three peaks. Its water is strongly acidic, hostile to fish and plants alike, and that lifeless chemistry is exactly what makes it so strange to look at: depending on the sunlight, the season, and the weather, the surface shifts between blue, jade, and a vivid emerald green, earning it the nickname Goshiki-numa, the "five-color marsh." You cannot go down to it — the shore is off-limits, and the lake sits under constant volcanic monitoring — so you view it from the rim near Katta-dake, peering into a saturated green eye set in raw gray ash and gravel. The beauty is real, and so is the harshness underneath it; the two never quite separate. And because the access roads close all winter under deep snow, the cauldron is something you can only visit for roughly half the year.
