Oshino Hakkai (Eight Springs of Oshino)

忍野八海おしのはっかい

At the northern foot of Mount Fuji, in the village of Oshino, water that fell as rain and snow on the great volcano resurfaces — but only after a journey of some twenty years filtering down through layer upon layer of lava. What emerges is water of almost unreal clarity, pooling into eight springs whose names carry their own histories: Deguchi, Okama, Sokonuke, Choshi, Waku, Nigori, Kagami, and Shobu. Peer into Waku-ike, the most famous, and the surface seems to vanish: you look straight down into a deep emerald shaft where a lava cave descends into the earth, the water so transparent it scarcely registers as water at all. These are not ordinary ponds. Designated a National Natural Monument in 1934 and inscribed in 2013 as part of the World Cultural Heritage of Mount Fuji, the eight springs were a sacred circuit where Fuji-ko pilgrims purified themselves before ascending the mountain. By tradition, the distant Deguchi-ike represents Polaris and the remaining seven the Big Dipper — a constellation laid out in water. Here the hydrology of Mount Fuji and centuries of mountain worship are fused into a single, luminous landscape.
