Urufushine Shrine (Noh and Kyogen Mask Collection)

宇流冨志禰神社(能狂言面コレクション)うるふしねじんじゃ

The tutelary shrine of Nabari, standing in Hirao, Nabari City, and identified with the Engishiki-listed Urufushiya Shrine. The chief deity is Unane-no-mikoto, enshrined together with Takemikazuchi, Futsunushi and many others. Its greatest treasure is a collection of Noh and Kyogen masks handed down as sacred property. These masks are said to have been received from the residence of the Todo family, lords of Iga-Ueno, and are designated cultural properties of Mie Prefecture. A mask collection that moved from a daimyo residence to the leading shrine of a castle town and survives intact at a shrine is rare nationwide. At the Nabari Autumn Festival (October), floats from each town parade and a lion kagura is dedicated here. A site where the refined flower of samurai culture and local festivity overlap within one shrine, it is precious for both performing-arts and religious history.
