Nichirin-ji Temple (Yamaga Daibutsu / Obinzuru-sama)

日輪寺(山鹿大仏・おびんずる様)にちりんじ(やまがだいぶつ・おびんずるさま)

On the wooded hillside behind a quiet Soto Zen temple in Yamaga, Kumamoto, a roughly 30-meter giant Buddha lies sprawled against the slope like nothing else in Japan. This is Obinzuru-sama — Pindola Bharadvaja, one of the Buddha's ten great disciples — built not seated, not standing, but in a half-reclining, face-up posture its makers describe as 'without parallel in the world.' The effect is genuinely uncanny: a vast figure leaning back into the mountain at an angle, so unexpectedly tilted that giant-Buddha enthusiasts have compared it to a reclining robot. There is sincere devotion underneath the spectacle. Pindola is Japan's classic nade-botoke, the 'rubbing Buddha': you stroke the statue on the same spot where your own body aches, and pray for it to heal. Inside the colossus's chest are enshrined the temple's principal image and a reclining double of the rubbing Buddha. The temple itself is no novelty — founded as a Tendai temple in the Heian period and revived as a Zen temple by the Kikuchi clan in 1316, it is famous for 200 cherry trees, 35,000 azaleas, a hair-relic pagoda of the Ako loyal retainers, and a gate bell counted among Higo's three great temple bells. The giant Obinzuru is the strangest thing on the grounds, but it sits inside a layered, working sacred landscape rather than apart from it.
