Manji Stone Buddha
万治の石仏まんじのせきぶつ
Across a small river from the spring shrine of Suwa Taisha sits one of Japan's most disarming pieces of folk sculpture: a Buddha that is essentially a boulder wearing a face. In 1657, the story goes, a stonemason set his chisel to a great block of andesite to carve a torii gate — and the stone bled. Spooked, the masons used a different stone and, in penance, turned this one into a seated Amida Buddha instead, finishing it in 1660, the third year of the Manji era, which is how it got its name. They barely touched it. The rounded natural mass of the rock was left as the body, incised only shallowly with a meditating Amida and a scatter of esoteric symbols — a swastika, sun, moon, clouds, lightning. Onto this enormous lump they perched a small, almost comically modest head. The result is a silhouette that shouldn't work and absolutely does: top-heavy in reverse, solemn and slightly funny at the same time. For three centuries it was just a beloved village 'Amida-sama' until 1974, when the artist Taro Okamoto stood in front of it and declared it the most fascinating thing he'd seen anywhere in the world. His enthusiasm — echoed by the novelist Jiro Nitta — made the anonymous wayside Buddha nationally famous overnight. Pilgrims still circle it three times, chanting a wish; it remains a town cultural property and a quietly strange object of real devotion.
