Kegon Falls

華厳の滝けごんのたき

In the highlands above Nikko, the waters of Lake Chuzenji pour off a 97-meter cliff in a single white column — Kegon Falls, one of the "Three Great Waterfalls of Japan" alongside Fukuroda and Nachi. The geology alone is remarkable: Lake Chuzenji exists only because an eruption of Mount Nantai dammed a valley, and the lake's overflow has spent millennia carving the friable rock into this gorge. But Kegon is famous for a darker reason. On May 22, 1903, a brilliant young student named Misao Fujimura carved a final message — "Gantou no Kan," Thoughts from the Cliff's Edge — into an oak above the falls and threw himself in, declaring that "the true nature of all existence" could be summed up in a single word: incomprehensible. His death detonated through Meiji society and triggered a wave of copycat plunges, fixing Kegon in the national memory as the place where modern Japan's philosophical despair found its symbol. Today a vertigo-inducing elevator drops a full 100 meters through the bedrock to a viewing platform that faces the plunge pool head-on. We treat this history as intellectual and social record, not as ghost-story spectacle.
