Sapporo Daibutsu (Konpira-mitsuji Temple)
札幌大仏(金毘羅密寺)さっぽろだいぶつ(こんぴらみつじ)
Hidden inside an unassuming modern building in the Miyanosawa district of Sapporo's Nishi Ward sits one of Japan's largest wooden Buddhas — and almost nobody outside Hokkaido knows it is there. Officially the principal image of Konpira-mitsuji, a Koyasan Shingon temple whose own main deity is the syncretic god Konpira Daigongen, the so-called "Sapporo Great Buddha" is in fact a colossal seated statue of Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom. It was carved over roughly sixteen years, beginning from an original model in 1988 and consecrated in 2003, using methods consciously modeled on the construction of the Great Buddha of Todai-ji in Nara. What makes it strange is precisely what makes it ordinary as Buddhist practice: rather than the open-air colossi that dominate Japan's roadside-attraction circuit, this giant was built to be permanently enshrined indoors, protected from Hokkaido's snow. Step through the doors and a towering wooden figure fills the hall in near silence. It is less a tourist spectacle than a working place of prayer — a stop on the Hokkaido Thirteen Buddhas pilgrimage and the Sapporo Seven Lucky Gods circuit — which is exactly why encountering it feels so unexpected.
