Nezame no Toko (Granite Gorge of the Kiso River)
寝覚の床ねざめのとこ
A scenic granite gorge on the Kiso River, designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 1923 and incorporated into the Chuo Alps Quasi-National Park in 2020. The landform results from the differential erosion of an exposed granite intrusion by the river's fast-flowing current: the jointed structure of the bedrock (sheeting joints) produces the characteristic rectilinear arrangement of large rock masses at the water's edge, a formation type known in Japanese geology as hojosetsuriseki. Pothole formations (oketsu) are also visible. The granite surface was exposed by erosion approximately 12,000 years before present. The site has been celebrated in classical Japanese travel literature since the Edo period — poets and scholars traveling the Nakasendo highway composed verses about it — and appears in the prefectural song Shinano no Kuni (1900) in the line 'tabi no yadori no nezame no toko' (Nezame no Toko, resting-place of the traveler's sleep-and-waking). The site is also associated with the Urashima legend, a folkloric tradition in which Urashima Taro, having returned from the undersea Dragon Palace (Ryugu-jo) and aged rapidly upon opening the prohibited casket, is said to have awakened here as an old man — the name Nezame (sleep-waking) referencing this narrative of temporal dislocation.

Highlights
- 01Sheeting-joint granite formations and pothole landforms of geological rarity in a Japanese river-gorge context, exposed approximately 12,000 years ago and eroding at a documented rate of approximately 1.7 m per millennium
- 02Dual viewing modes: overhead perspective from the Rinsenji Temple precinct observation deck, and immersive river-level access from the gorge floor via steep stairway descent
- 03The site is visible from the JR Chuo Main Line (Limited Express Shinano) between Agematsu and Kiso-Fukushima stations, where train staff customarily announce the passing and reduce speed
