Tetsudo Shrine and JR Highest Altitude Railway Point
鉄道神社(JR鉄道最高地点)てつどうじんじゃ(じぇいあーるてつどうさいこうちてん)
At a level crossing between Kiyosato and Nobeyama stations on the JR Koumi Line (Yatsugatake Highland Line), at 1,375 m above sea level, stands the highest point on any JR railway route in Japan. A small red-torii Shinto shrine called Tetsudo Shrine (Railway Shrine) was erected here in April 2005 by the "Society of Those Who Love the JR Highest Point," with the iron wheel and rails of a retired steam locomotive enshrined as the sacred object. Because the wheel pair is regarded as a matched couple, the shrine is associated with prayers for good relationships and marital harmony, drawing visitors beyond railway enthusiasts. Nobeyama Station, approximately 2.3 km away, holds the distinction of being Japan's highest-altitude railway station at 1,345.67 m.
