Togakushi Shrine Okusha (Inner Shrine)
戸隠神社・奥社とがくしじんじゃ・おくしゃ
The principal sanctuary of the five-shrine Togakushi complex, enshrining Ame-no-Tajikarao no Mikoto, the deity of great physical strength credited in the Kojiki mythology with opening the Ama-no-Iwato (Heavenly Rock Cave) and thereby restoring light to the world. The site traces its institutional origins to 849, when the ascetic scholar Gakumon entered the mountain and established a shugendo (mountain ascetic) training ground. During the medieval period, Togakushi ranked alongside Mt. Hiei and Mt. Koya as one of the three great monastic complexes of Japan, known collectively as the Sanzen-bo Sanzan. The approach road from the torii gate to the inner shrine, approximately one kilometer in length, is lined with Japanese cedars exceeding 400 years in age, designated a Natural Monument of Nagano Prefecture. The site lies within Myoko Togakushi Renzan National Park.
