Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and Ryugenji Mabu (Shaft)

石見銀山・龍源寺間歩いわみぎんざん・りゅうげんじまぶ

The sole shaft (mabu) within the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and its Cultural Landscape' (inscribed 2007) open to general visitors year-round. The site was one of the five mountains under direct shogunate administration ('Ojikiyama,' or direct-administration mountains) in the middle Edo period. Over 600 shafts have been identified at Iwami Ginzan; Ryugenji Mabu is the only one accessible throughout the year. The interior walls of the shaft preserve intact the chisel marks left by the Edo-period miners (yamashi) who worked the rock face. Also visible within the shaft is a tateko (vertical shaft) — bored vertically to a depth of 100 metres for drainage purposes — which can be viewed from the interior.
