Susa Jinja Shrine (Sacred Site of Susanoo's Soul-Pacification)
須佐神社すさじんじゃ
An Engishiki-listed shrine (kokuheisha, national-offering small shrine) regarded as the site where Susanoo-no-Mikoto performed his own 'soul-pacification' (mitama-shizume). The Izumo-no-kuni Fudoki (regional gazetteer of Izumo Province) records that 'Susanoo-no-Mikoto pacified his own spirit here,' making this the only shrine so described in that document. Susanoo is enshrined here as the principal deity of the hon-miya. The main hall, built in the first year of Bunkyu (1861), is in the taisha-zukuri architectural style (designated Important Cultural Property of Shimane Prefecture) and stands approximately 12 metres in height. The sacred tree — a Japanese cedar estimated to be over 1,300 years old with a trunk circumference of approximately six metres — has attracted recent attention as a site of spiritual potency.
