Heisen-ji Hakusan Jinja Shrine
平泉寺白山神社へいせんじはくさんじんじゃ
The Echizen base of Hakusan belief, founded by the monk Taicho in the first year of Yoro (717 CE). At its height in the late Muromachi period, the precinct housed 6,000 subsidiary temples and 8,000 warrior-monks, functioning as a major medieval religious city. In the second year of Tensho (1574), the entire complex was burned to the ground by the Ikko-ikki (Single-Mind League) uprising — the very event from which the place-name 'Katsuyama' (Victory Mountain) is said to derive. The writer Shiba Ryotaro described the moss-covered grounds — over 120 species of moss forming a carpet across the precincts — as making 'the Moss Temple of Kyoto seem laughable.' Excavations begun in 1989 have progressively revealed medieval stone-paved paths and stone-wall constructions of a scale and sophistication rarely paralleled elsewhere in Japan. The shrine also holds a 'shikinen-sai gokaichou' (periodic grand opening) once every 33 years — the most recent was in May 2025; the next will be in 2058.

Deep Dive
Religion
Religion
The main deity Izanami no Mikoto is enshrined in the principal hall; related deities occupy Ominachi-sha, Bessansha, Sannomiya, and Kaisansha. The shrine served as the starting point of the Echizen Zenjodo (sacred pilgrimage route) up Mount Hakusan (elevation 2,702m), the sacred peak of Hakusan mountain worship. Every 33 years, doors are opened and deity statues displayed in a 'Shikinen-sai' ceremony (most recently held May 23–25, 2025; next in 2058).
Architecture
Architecture
The current shrine halls were donated by the Fukui Domain in the Edo period. The old precincts' stone-paved paths and stone walls are gradually emerging through excavations ongoing since 1989. In the Minamidani (South Valley) monastic quarter, stone-paved roads of river stones from the Kuzuryu River (15th to 16th century) and stone retaining walls have been excavated—their scale and precision are virtually unparalleled among medieval Japanese stone-paving. Planned urban subdivision, drainage channels, and side gutters of the medieval religious city have also been confirmed. The precincts contain the 'Seven Great Cryptomerias of Heisenji,' seven sugi trees with trunk circumferences over 5m that survived the 1574 burning. The 1.2km stone-paved approach road has been selected for 'Japan's 100 Great Roads' (1986) and '100 New Street Tree Landscapes' (1994). The Hakusan Zenjodo pilgrimage route (Heisenji to Mount Hakusan) is designated one of '100 Historic Roads' (1996).
