Nakanose Amida Triad Cliff Buddha

中ノ瀬阿弥陀三尊磨崖仏なかのせあみださんぞんまがいぶつ

An Amida triad carved directly into the bedrock of the Tsuge River in Terada, Iga City. The central Amida Nyorai is flanked by attendant Bodhisattvas Kannon and Seishi, forming a classical Amida triad rendered straight onto a midstream cliff face. The carvings are estimated to date from the medieval period (Kamakura–Muromachi), reflecting the mountain- and water-side worship traditions of the Iga region. Because the work is integrated with the river itself, its visibility shifts with the season and water level; high water makes approach hazardous.
