Mishiodono Shrine and Sacred Salt Route
御塩殿神社・御塩道みしおどのじんじゃ・みしおみち
An auxiliary shrine of the Inner Shrine (Naikū) of Ise Jingū, devoted to the production of the hardened salt (katashio) used in Jingū rituals. The Ise City Tourist Association describes a two-stage process: highly concentrated brine is reduced to coarse salt at the Mishio-yakisho, then molded and fire-hardened at the Mishio-dono itself. Read together with the Mishio-michi (Sacred Salt Route) along which brine from the Mishio-hama salt fields is carried to the shrine, the site forms an unusual production-ritual complex on the periphery of Jingū.
