Kuki Yoshitaka Head Mound and Body Mound
九鬼嘉隆の首塚・胴塚くきよしたかのくびづか・どうづか
Two separate burial sites on Tōshi-jima island, where the head and body of the Sengoku-era Kuki navy commander Kuki Yoshitaka were interred apart. Kanko Mie records that, per his will, his head was buried at the summit of Mt. Tsukijo with a view over Toba Castle; Ise-Shima Kanko Navi explains that the body mound stands in the town center of Wagu Fishing Port, near the former Tōsen-an temple site and the 'Chiarai-ike' (blood-washing pond). The fact that the head and body mounds are physically separated on the island makes this site readable as a folk-religion record of a divided-body burial tradition, rather than as an ordinary samurai gravesite.
