Saishō-ji Temple (Sokushinbutsu & Raijū Mummy)
西生寺(即身仏と雷獣のミイラ)さいしょうじ(そくしんぶつとらいじゅうのみいら)
An old temple on the flank of Mt. Yahiko enshrining the sokushinbutsu (self-mummified Buddhist monk) of Kōchi Hōin. The official site states that, after 3,000 days of austerities, Kōchi Hōin entered nyūjō in 1363 and has remained as a sokushinbutsu ever since. The treasure hall also preserves a so-called 'raijū' (thunder beast) mummy — death, prayer, folk lore and temple-treasure display layered densely in a single site.
