Makomanai Takino Cemetery (Head Daibutsu & Moai)

真駒内滝野霊園(頭大仏・モアイ像)まこまないたきのれいえん(あたまだいぶつ・もあいぞう)

A vast public-park cemetery, run by a public-interest body, where moai statues, a stonehenge, six Jizō, Kannon images and the Tadao Andō-designed Atama Daibutsu (Head Buddha) hall stand side by side. Per the official site, the larger moai reach 9.5 m tall and 120 t, and the Head Buddha hall is 13.5 m high and weighs 1,500 t, with only the giant Buddha's head emerging from a hill. A modern memorial space whose scale and mash-up of monuments is genuinely uncanny.
