Tsubaki Grand Shrine (Inner Sanctuary and Kanae Waterfall)

椿大神社(奥の宮・かなえの滝)つばきおおかみやしろ

The Tsubaki Grand Shrine (Tsubaki Ōkami Yashiro) is the national head shrine of Sarutahiko-no-Ōkami — the colossal, long-nosed deity who guided the gods' descent to earth and serves in Japanese mythology as the patron of crossroads, journeys, and destiny's opening. The main shrine complex is impressive in the way that large, well-maintained ancient shrines are impressive, but the real draw for those willing to walk the additional twenty minutes into the mountain is the Oku-no-Miya (inner sanctuary) and the small Kanae Falls beyond it. At the inner sanctuary, the forest changes character in the way that forests around genuinely old sacred sites sometimes do: the cedars become larger, the light becomes different, the quality of quiet becomes active rather than passive. The falls themselves are modest in scale but situated at a point where the path's increasing steepness, the narrowing of the cedar canopy, and the sound of water converging all conspire to produce the specific sensation associated with genuine mountain pilgrimage. As the most accessible major power spot from Kameyama, Tsubaki offers full sacred-mountain experience within a thirty-minute drive.
