Atami Hihoukan (Secret Treasure Museum)

Japan's hihoukan — "secret treasure museums" — were a genre of adult entertainment attraction unique to the Shōwa era: theme parks of erotic folk art, carved automata, and painted dioramas that occupied a peculiar space between cultural education and carnivalesque titillation. At their peak in the 1970s and 80s, hihoukan dotted the resort coastlines of Japan, offering honeymooning couples a transgressive supplement to their hot spring holidays. Most are gone now, their campy maximalism incompatible with the sanitized aesthetics of modern tourism. The Atami Hihoukan survives as the last major heir to this tradition, and as a result it has become something more than entertainment: it is a living fossil of an entire social attitude, a preservation of an era when Japanese resort culture was uninhibited in ways that contemporary travel can barely imagine. The extra layer of absurdity — that reaching it requires a ropeway ride up a hillside — was clearly an intentional piece of theatrical staging, ensuring that the ascent itself becomes part of the spectacle. For the cultural historian, the Japan nostalgia obsessive, or simply the traveler who wants to see something genuinely impossible to find anywhere else on Earth, the Atami Hihoukan rewards the detour.
