Mochigase Nagashi-bina (Floating Doll Rite)

D A T E2026-04-19

A doll-floating rite transmitted in Mochigase-chō, Tottori City, Tottori, on the 3rd day of the third lunar month. Tottori Prefectural Designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Paper dolls, peach blossoms, and rapeseed flowers are placed on a small straw raft (sandawara) and set adrift on the Sendai River, sending the year's defilement and misfortune away with the doll. A nationally rare survival of the archaic 'float' form of the Jōshi Sekku rite, before it shifted nationally to the 'display' form of Hinamatsuri.
