Sabā-okuri
サバー送りさばーおくり
D A T E2026-07-05
A nationally rare insect-sending rite transmitted in Nagato City, Yamaguchi. Yamaguchi Prefectural Designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Two straw effigies — 'Sabā-sama' and 'Sanemori-sama' — are relayed from hamlet to hamlet starting from Iiyama Hachimangū, finally sent out beyond the cluster of hamlets, to drive away rice pests and pray for abundant harvest. 'Sabā' is said to mean the pest itself, or alternatively the deity who quells the pest; the hamlet-spanning relay structure sets it apart from insect-sending rites elsewhere.
