Mugi Himegami Matsuri (Phallic Deity Festival)

牟岐姫神祭りむぎひめがみまつり

D A T E2026-07-26

A phallic-faith festival held on the last weekend of July each year at Mugi Hachiman Shrine in Mugi Town, Kaifu District, Tokushima Prefecture. Based on a tragic-romance legend tied to 'Himegami', a phallic-shaped rock (3 m tall, 1.5 m in diameter) on the uninhabited offshore island of Mugi-Ōshima, a phallic deity body is paraded through the town and then carried by fishing boats in a maritime parade out to Mugi-Ōshima. A local rite combining prayers for agricultural and fishing prosperity with phallic faith.
