Oni-Hashiri at Dadado Hall

陀々堂の鬼はしりだだどうのおにはしり

D A T E2026-01-14

A 'demon-running' rite held on January 14 each year at the Dadado Hall of Nembutsu-ji Temple in Otsu, Gojo City, Nara Prefecture, marking the conclusion of the temple's Shushō-e New Year ritual. Twice — once in the afternoon and once at night — three demons bearing large torches race through the hall while flames rise from the goma altar, in prayer for freedom from illness and for abundant harvests at the year's beginning. A children's demon-running is also held. A Nationally Designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
