Hamochi Festival Tsuburo Sashi (Fertility Dance)

羽茂まつりのつぶろさしはもちまつりのつぶろさし

D A T E2026-06-15

A fertility kagura held on June 15 each year in the Hamochi district of Sado City, Niigata. The 'tsuburo sashi' dancer with a phallic wooden staff, the female role 'sasara-suri', the 'zeni-daiko' (coin drum) player, and a lion figure appear, performing humorous 'kamake-waza' (sympathetic-act) movements to encourage abundant harvests. The three communities of Terada, Murayama, and Iioka each perform their own style, then proceed on a kadozuke (door-to-door) tour. A Niigata Prefecturally Designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
