Tenteko Festival of Nishio
西尾のてんてこ祭にしおのてんてこまつり
D A T E2026-01-03
An agrarian pre-celebration rite held on January 3 at Niiike Hachiman Shrine in Nishio, Aichi Prefecture. Six men of inauspicious age, in red attire and wearing phalluses carved from radish at their waists, parade swinging their hips to the 'tenteko' musical accompaniment and present a rice-planting song before the deity. On arrival in the precincts, straw ash is scattered onto the spectators with a bamboo broom as an act of misfortune-warding. An Aichi Prefecturally Designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
