A drum performance transmitted in Nafune-cho, Wajima City, Ishikawa, in which performers wearing grotesque masks of Hannya demons, ghosts, Daruma figures and other monstrous faces beat drums with violent intensity. Tradition traces its origin to 1577, when villagers are said to have driven back the invading army of Uesugi Kenshin with frightening masks and thunderous drumming at night. Designated a Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Its proper setting is the Nafune Festival (July 31 – August 1).
