Minato Tsuruga Float Museum (Minato Tsuruga Yama Kaikan)

みなとつるが山車会館みなとつるがやまかいかん

Most festival floats you only glimpse once a year, rolling past in a crowd. Here, in a purpose-built hall in the old port town of Tsuruga, three of the six festival floats of the Kehi Shrine grand festival stand indoors year-round — and indoors, freed from the street, their sheer scale is startling. Each float is a multi-tiered wooden tower crowned by a life-sized warrior figure dressed in genuine armor and a real Noh mask, staging a frozen moment of a Warring States battle: one warrior rears back on a white horse, drawing a bow, the whole tableau climbing nearly to the ceiling, two building-stories tall above the visitors below. The armor is not costume but the real thing, as are the masks; a second-floor gallery lets you circle a suit of it at 360 degrees. In the old days the largest floats carried a sacred pine over nine meters high as a vessel for the descending god, so wide it filled the lane. The museum keeps that gigantism and the eerie theatrical realism of the warrior scenes on tap regardless of weather or date — a rare place to stand under a festival float and feel how monstrous it really is. A screen theater seals it, with a float sliding out toward the audience at the climax.
