Tsuriishi Shrine

釣石神社つりいしじんじゃ

On a wooded slope near the mouth of the Kitakami River in northeastern Miyagi, a single enormous boulder juts out of the cliff face and hangs there, girded by a thick sacred straw rope, looking for all the world like it is about to crash down onto the worshippers below. It never does. That is the entire premise of Tsuriishi Shrine — the name literally means "suspended stone." The upper boulder, roughly 14 meters around, is the male deity; a second stone below, about 8 by 4 meters, is the female deity; and the shrine itself is dedicated to Amenokoyane no Mikoto, the god of wisdom and learning. What turned a local rock into a nationally known pilgrimage site was catastrophe. In 1978 a magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck offshore and the boulder did not move. In 2011 the Great East Japan Earthquake sent a tsunami up the estuary that erased the surrounding village and swept away the shrine's office, its torii gate, and its ema hall — and still the stone did not fall. From that came its title: "the exam-passing god that looks about to fall but never does." The lower boulder is now armored in thousands of wooden votive tablets left by students, and a flight of 174 stone steps climbs past the rock to an inner sanctuary rebuilt in 1914. It is at once a place of ancient rock worship and a very modern engine of test anxiety.
