Ushiku Daibutsu (Ushiku Great Buddha)
牛久阿弥陀大佛(牛久大仏)うしくあみだだいぶつ
Ushiku Daibutsu in Ushiku City, Ibaraki, is a colossal standing statue of Amida Buddha 120 meters tall (a 100 m figure on a 20 m pedestal). Built by Higashi Honganji of the Jodo Shinshu sect in a region tied to its founder Shinran, it was begun in 1986 and completed in 1993. Clad in over 6,000 bronze plates and weighing about 4,000 tons, it is recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's tallest bronze Buddha. Its defining feature is overwhelming scale-the Great Buddha of Nara would fit in its palm. The interior is a five-story pilgrimage facility, with an elevator rising to a chest-level observation deck at 85 meters; the 480 curls on its head are each 1 m wide and weigh some 200 kg. Surrounded by an expansive garden with a petting zoo and seasonal flower fields, it stands as an icon of modern Japan's monumental-Buddha landscape.
