The 'N!' Billboard (along National Route 42)
「ん!」看板(国道42号沿い)んかんばん
Somewhere along National Route 42 in Taiki Town stands a tall white billboard that says, in two enormous black hiragana characters, only "ん!"—roughly "n!", the kind of grunt of surprise that isn't even a word. There is no place name, no slogan up top, nothing to decode; just that single syllable and an exclamation mark, looming against a netted mountain slope and the open sky. The fine print at the bottom finally explains it, sort of: it is an ad for Ogawa Co., Ltd., a construction company based in nearby Meiwa Town, complete with "anything about construction, leave it to us!", a phone number, and—best of all—a line reading "advertisers wanted." Asked why, the company president told J-Town Net in 2023, "There's no meaning to it (laughs). It's an eye-catching design—isn't that fun?" Erected about a decade ago, the sign has since drifted around social media as Taiki Town's "mystery billboard," a perfect specimen of roadside-advertising minimalism: a monument whose entire content is the bare act of making you go "huh?"
