Sun Messe Nichinan

サンメッセ日南さんめっせにちなん

Perched on a hill above Japan's Nichinan coast, Sun Messe Nichinan is best known for a row of seven Moai statues facing out over the Pacific. These are no ordinary roadside imitations: they are full-scale replicas of Easter Island's famous "Ahu Akivi" Moai, built with what the park describes as the first formal permission ever granted by the council of elders of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) to reproduce the statues. Authorized copies of the Moai are vanishingly rare anywhere in the world, which makes a legally sanctioned set sitting on a Japanese clifftop genuinely strange — sacred ancestor-figures of a distant Pacific island, lifted out of their original meaning and re-staged against subtropical sea and sky. The park doubles down on the oddness with an earnest, almost spiritual mission statement ("to realize a way of living the Earth permits, by receiving the message of the sun") and fills its grounds with a Bell of Gratitude to the Earth, painted humanoid figures called "Voyant," observation decks, and an insect museum. The result is one of Miyazaki's signature scenic curiosities: a place where a faithful piece of borrowed sacred art, mass tourism, and homegrown New Age philosophy all share the same grassy hilltop.
