Daisekirinzan (ASMUI Spiritual Hikes)
大石林山だいせきりんざん
At the very northern tip of Okinawa's main island, where the East China Sea meets a tangle of subtropical jungle, the ground itself begins to behave strangely. Limestone laid down some 250 million years ago has been dissolved by rain over unimaginable stretches of time into a forest of blade-like grey pinnacles — a karst landscape said to be the northernmost of its tropical kind anywhere on Earth. The rocks rise like petrified swords through the green canopy, and walking the trails among them feels less like a hike than a passage through deep geological time. But Daisekirinzan is more than rock. The whole area overlaps with Asumui, the sacred ground where, in Ryukyuan creation myth, the ancestral deity Amamikyo is said to have first descended to begin the making of the islands. Particular stones and ancient banyans here are objects of prayer, and the site sits squarely within Okinawa's living utaki tradition, in which the land itself is holy. The park lies within Yanbaru National Park and beside a World Natural Heritage zone, and in December 2024 it was renamed "ASMUI Spiritual Hikes" to foreground exactly this fusion of rare geology and sacred landscape.
