Takashiba Dekoyashiki & Dorokukan
高柴デコ屋敷道六館たかしばでこやしきどうろくかん
Hidden in the hills of Koriyama, Fukushima, Takashiba Dekoyashiki is a 300-year-old village of doll-makers — the birthplace of the Miharu-goma, a stubby black wooden horse painted in fierce red, gold, and blue, and of Miharu harimono, papier-mâché figures shaped over wooden molds. The craft was begun, tradition holds, by a samurai family who laid down their swords to farm and make auspicious toys, and four workshops still carry it on today, offering paint-your-own sessions amid thatched-roof houses and a horse-shaped shrine. The Miharu-goma was even chosen for Japan's very first New Year postage stamp. But tucked into one corner of this wholesome folk village is something stranger: the Dorokukan, a tiny unmanned museum of fertility worship. Behind a token-operated door sit votive objects shaped like phalluses and vulvae, offerings made in prayer for childbirth, fertility, and marital harmony — relics not of titillation but of dōsojin roadside-deity belief, the earthy faith in the reproduction of life. The juxtaposition is the whole point: festive 'sacred' toys for sale out front, and the oldest of folk prayers enshrined in a shed out back.
