Tachikue-kyo Gorge

立久恵峡たちくえきょう

A gorge extending approximately two kilometres along the upper Kando River (Kando-gawa) in the southern part of Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. On both banks, columnar-jointed cliffs of andesite and dacite rise to heights of 50 to 150 metres, and the gorge is also known as 'the Yabakei of San'in' (by analogy with the celebrated gorge in Oita Prefecture). The site is designated a National Scenic Beauty and lies within a Natural Park. The cliffs were formed by the erosion of dacite lava produced by volcanic activity approximately 15 million years ago. The ancient temple of Reikoji (Tachikue Yakushi) stands against the cliff face at the rear of its precinct, and the grounds contain a collection of Gohyaku Rakan (500 Disciples of the Buddha) figures that create a distinctive atmosphere. Three pedestrian suspension bridges span the Kando River within the gorge, each offering a different perspective on the landscape.
