Akakura Sacred Ground (Shaman Pilgrimage Site on Mt. Iwaki)

赤倉霊場あかくられいじょう

Spread across the northeastern mid-slope of Mt. Iwaki (Tsugaru Fuji) in Hirosaki City, this mountain sacred ground has been associated with demon legends and ascetic practice since at least the medieval period. In the modern era it developed into the principal sacred site of the Kamisa (Gomiso) — Tsugaru's indigenous spirit-possession shamans, mediums who receive divine transmissions (kamiOroshi) — with 28 ritual halls constructed within the national forest between roughly 1955 and 1975. In contrast to the officially recognized Iwakisan Shrine, this site represents a popular religious space that developed outside official ecclesiastical structures. The demon legends associated with Akakura Mountain are closely intertwined with oni (demon) traditions elsewhere in the Tsugaru region.
