Jofuku-no-Miya Shrine in Hadasu

徐福ノ宮(波田須)じょふくのみや(はだす)

A small shrine on Mt. Hōrai (also called Maruyama) in Hadasu-cho, Kumano City, dedicated to Xu Fu (Jofuku), a figure said to have been sent by China's Qin Shi Huang in search of an elixir of immortality and to have settled in this area. The City of Kumano introduces Jofuku-no-Miya as a heritage tourism resource, and the Kumano City Tourism Association notes that the site has parking for three cars, no toilet, and is reached in about 20 minutes by car from JR Kumano Station or roughly a 10-minute walk from JR Hadasu Station. The Xu Fu story is a local tradition rather than confirmed history, but the shrine is notable as a small site that enshrines a continental immigrant as a deity, set within the village landscape of the Iseji route of the Kumano Kodō.
