Akakura Shrine
丹倉神社あかぐらじんじゃ
A small, ancient shrine deep in the mountains beyond the Akakura settlement in Ikuo-cho, Kumano City. The Kumano City Tourism Association explains that the shrine takes a massive boulder as its sacred body, reflecting an iwakura (sacred-rock) tradition rooted in the area before pilgrims began visiting the Kumano Sanzan, and notes the striking sight of trees growing from the top of the rock. Worship here centers on the boulder itself rather than a main hall, making the site readable as a small but vivid example of Kumano's archaic nature worship. There is no parking and no toilet; access requires a car and care on narrow mountain roads.
