Awashima Shrine
淡嶋神社あわしまじんじゃ
A shrine in Kada, Wakayama City, known nationwide for memorial rites for dolls. Within its precincts stand great numbers of dolls offered from all over Japan, in connection with prayers for recovery from women's illnesses and for safe birth. Although the site is easily framed in 'haunted' terms, on Bizarre Japan we treat it strictly as a folk-religion site of doll memorial and women's devotion.
