Mara Kannon
麻羅観音まらかんのん
Mara Kannon is a small wayside shrine in the hot-spring district of Tawarayama, Nagato, where the local story begins in tragedy. When the warlord Ouchi Yoshitaka was overthrown in 1551, his young heir was reportedly disguised as a girl and smuggled into hiding here, only to be discovered, captured, and killed. The shrine began as a memorial for the boy, and over the centuries the offerings — carved wooden phalluses left by parishioners — took on a second life as petitions for fertility, safe childbirth, marital harmony, and good matches. The site is small, free, and open-air, and a local memorial service is still held annually. It is best understood not as a roadside curiosity but as a layering of mourning, lineage, and fertility belief — and depicted with that in mind.
