Narita-san Kurume Branch Temple Jigokukan (Hell Hall)

On the outskirts of Kurume, in Fukuoka Prefecture, a regional branch of the famous Narita-san temple complex maintains one of the more theatrically committed hell experiences in Japanese Buddhism. The Jigokukan ('Hell Hall') is a walk-through diorama of the Eight Great Hells of Buddhist cosmology — Black Rope, Crushing, Screaming, Twice-Screaming, Scorching, Twice-Scorching, Reviving, and the endless avici — each rendered as a separate room with life-sized figures of demons inflicting period-appropriate torments on the damned, accompanied by sound effects and selective lighting that genuinely raise the heart rate. The Hell Hall is positioned within a larger pilgrimage circuit that includes a vast Merciful Mother Kannon, a Peace Pagoda containing a Pure Land hall, and a Filial Piety Cave — moving the visitor through fear, mercy, and gratitude in roughly that order. The intent is moral instruction in the medieval Japanese pattern: see the hells in physical detail, then experience the consolation of paradise. Allow an hour for the full circuit and bring children old enough to know that the demons are not real.
