UFO Fureai-kan (UFO Encounter Museum)
UFOふれあい館ゆーふぉーふれあいかん
At the foot of Mount Senganmori — a strangely conical, near-pyramidal peak that has been a UFO-sighting hot spot since the 1970s — sits one of the only municipally operated UFO museums in Japan. UFO Fureai-kan was opened in 1992 by what was then Iino Town (now part of Fukushima City) as part of a town-wide branding strategy that designated the entire district 'the UFO Village.' The collection is based around roughly 3,000 items donated by the prolific UFO researcher Arai Kin'ichi: sighting reports, photographs, books, magazines, model spacecraft, alien figurines, and decades of correspondence with UFO investigators around the world. Permanent exhibits include life-sized alien mannequins, a small 3D theater dedicated to Senganmori's purported magnetic anomalies, and a hall of interactive 'experience' attractions. Once a year, the town hosts the UFO Festival, with alien-costume parades, contests, lectures, and sky-lantern launches — a rare case of a Japanese municipality going all-in on extraterrestrial speculation as community development. Treat with cheerful skepticism; the museum makes no claims it cannot back up, but the village around it has been earnestly committed to the bit for over thirty years.
