Shirakawa-gō (Hinamizawa Village — The Higurashi Model)

白川郷（ひぐらしの村）しらかわごう

Shirakawa-gō's UNESCO-listed gassho-zukuri farmhouses — their dramatically steep thatched roofs designed to shed the region's famous deep snowfall — have been a World Heritage site since 1995 and among the most photographed traditional settlements in Japan. Less frequently noted is that the village's combination of physical isolation (mountains on all sides, a single road in), collective social organization (the traditional yui system in which neighbors cooperate on roof maintenance), and a quality of visual perfection that feels slightly too composed has made it the recognized model for Hinamizawa, the fictional village in the horror-mystery visual novel and anime series Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. The franchise explicitly acknowledges the connection and has generated a substantial pilgrimage tourism to the site. In winter, when Shirakawa-gō receives snowfall that genuinely cuts it off from the outside world, and after the last tourist buses have departed, the village's other face — the one that is less a heritage site than an actual closed community with its own social codes and generational memory — becomes briefly visible.
