Inunaki Mountain Tunnel
犬鳴山トンネルいぬなきやまとんねる
The Inunaki ("Howling Dog Mountain") complex in southern Ōsaka Prefecture is unusual in that its supernatural reputation derives directly from its historical identity as a sacred site of Shugendo mountain asceticism — a training ground for yamabushi (mountain monks) opened more than 1,300 years ago by the monk En no Gyōja, Japan's patron of mountain religion. The tunnel that carries the old road through the mountain has accumulated the specific reputation of a portal where the rules of ordinary reality become negotiable: mirrors are said to show things they shouldn't; engines die without explanation; passengers feel the presence of riders who were not there at the beginning of the journey. The tunnel sits within a still-functioning sacred complex whose temple (Shippōryūji) continues to be used for ritual training, creating an unusual overlap between active religious practice and ghost tourism. The sincerity of one does nothing to diminish the atmosphere of the other.
