Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple (8,000 Stone Buddhas)
化野念仏寺あだしのねんぶつじ
At the far end of the Saga Arashiyama tourist corridor, past the last souvenir shops and the last bamboo grove photo opportunities, Adashino Nenbutsuji sits in the quiet upper reaches of Sagano — a Pure Land Buddhist temple whose grounds are home to approximately 8,000 stone Buddhas and grave markers, packed into the hillside in configurations that approach geological density. The site's origin is grim: in ancient times, this area at the edge of the capital was where the bodies of those who died without family or resources were left to decompose, unburied and unmourned. The priest Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) is said to have gathered and enshrined the abandoned dead here in the ninth century, beginning a tradition of memorial that has continued ever since. Each August, during the Sentō Kuyō ceremony, the stone figures are illuminated by hundreds of bamboo lanterns — an event of such concentrated otherworldly beauty that visitors regularly describe it as the most visually overwhelming thing they have ever seen. Throughout the year, without special illumination, the sheer accumulated mass of stone figures produces a quality of atmosphere that is entirely its own.
