Sekigahara WarLand

関ケ原ウォーランドせきがはらうぉーらんど

In the year 1600, on a misty plain in what is now Gifu Prefecture, the Battle of Sekigahara decided the future of Japan — 160,000 soldiers clashing in the decisive conflict that brought the Tokugawa shogunate to power. Today, that same plain hosts something far stranger than history: 240-plus life-sized concrete warriors, painted in vivid folk-art colors by the singular Asano Shōun, frozen in perpetual combat across a sprawling outdoor theme park. WarLand occupies its own peculiar niche — part history lesson, part outsider art installation, part low-budget theme park — and it refuses to commit fully to any of those categories. The warrior figures are hyperrealistic in pose and garish in color, arranged to recreate specific tactical moments of the battle with educational placards that sit incongruously beside Shōun's fever-dream aesthetic. Come at night, when the figures are lit from below: the darkness dissolves the educational context entirely and leaves you with 240 glowing samurai materializing from shadow, an image that belongs more to a waking nightmare than a history exhibit. This is one of three great Asano Shōun pilgrimage sites in the region — the others are Goshikien and Momotarō Shrine — and for sheer scale, WarLand is his magnum opus.
